Mr Bovine's Playground

I first heard the term Bovine Ordure from a radio interview of William F. Buckly. He described someone's ideas as being "So much Bovine Ordure". I thought to my self; "Did that guy just say on the radio what I thought he said?!?!?. Upon looking it up in the dictionary, I found out; "Yep - He did!". So this is the name I chose for my game name. A nice way of saying something nasty.

I've spent the first 21 years of my life in Pittsburgh PA. Took computer programming in High School because of 3 reasons;

  1. Machines are a guy thing. What says guy thing more than the ultimate machine?
  2. Star Trek was my favorite show growing up. There were 2 hero figures in that show, Kirk, and Spock. Kirk saved the day by beating people up and sometimes getting the snot kicked out of him. Spock saved the day by punching some numbers in the computer, and telling his captain that "the chances of success are 27,239,929 to one! I sort of liked the passive model....
  3. It was an easy math credit and it allowed me to skip having to take algebra 2.

Turns out I really should have taken algebra 2.

I've had various jobs during my adolescence.

  • Paperboy - For 6 years. Only 52 clients spread out over 2 miles of Western PA's mountainous terrain.
  • Dishwasher at a Chinese restaurant. Most miserable (and only) job I ever got fired from. I can remember the cooks saying; "Scrub corner of wall with toothbrush for 75 cents per hour!"
  • Dishwasher then assistant cook at a Wild Game food restaurant. Did half the work for double the pay and they told me to slow down. High School interfered with any aspiration I ever had to become a cook
  • Short order cook at a couple other restaurants
  • Grounds and pet keeper at a Kennels/Pet Cemetery. This place also had another site which was a humane society. That was a sad place, I much preferred working at the pet cemetery. If I ever start some kind of a BLOG, I'll regale you with some of the many strange stories from that place.

After graduating with an Associate's degree in 1980, I found a job in Columbia, SC. Working for a company that wrote utility billing software on DEC RT11, RSTS/E and VAX/VMS using the DIBOL language, I moved into the technical services department (What we now call IT). My responsibilities were to keep our data center up, provide OS and language support internally and for our clients. Did a lot of flying around the country doing performance analysis, OS installs and training

We were later purchased by another company, where we created a Consumer information systems that used Oracle. This way we could get away from software that ran only on a single platform. During this time I also did a lot of flying around installing Oracle, our package, and training people on Oracle and Unix administration.

In 1998, I moved into the realm of Lotus Notes development and administration. We were purchased again, and now I'm training to be a MS Exchange administrator. And now (with this web-site being my first serious effort) web designing.

I've made permanent residence here in the steamy south, and live here with my cat, Londo

My Hobbies/Loves of my life;
